For Colored Girls

Starring
: Janet Jackson, Kimberly Elise, Kerry Washington, Loretta Devine, Whoopi Goldberg, Anika Noni Rose, Thandie Newton, Phylicia Rashad, Tessa Thompson, Michael Ealy, Hill Harper, Omari Hardwick, & Macy Gray
Director: Tyler Perry
Rating: *****

The movie is excellent! I like to give for those of you who are like me and have never heard or seen the play, a little background information in case you were wondering where this came from. For Colored Girls was originally a Broadway play by Ntozake Shange in 1976. It's a choreopoem of twenty poems that are performed by seven characters represented by colors. The play was nominated for a Tony Award for best play in 1977.

Tyler Perry directed this film beautifully and was the perfect man for the job. Some people are not Madea fans but this play is nothing like a typical Tyler film. It's an intense ride through the realities that black women go through in our communities. Tyler gives this film a play feel, including the original poetry that is displayed in the play. The actors/actresses proved themselves in this film. Janet Jackson's acting abilities have never impressed me, but in this movie, it's not even like watching Janet Jackson. Kimberly Elise is stellar as always. I think every actress in this movie deserve an Oscar. True acting is when you make your audience feel as if you were that character.

I will warn you, this film is not for children or teenagers under the age of 16. This is the first Tyler Perry movie to be rated R; there are several graphic scenes and ideals in the this movie.

I would reveal more, but I want to keep some mystery about the film. I will say this, For Colored Girls will have a lasting positive effect on our community for decades to come; as did Spike Lee's Malcom X. Our communities need to expose the hearts of women and encourage them discovery of their true identity.

NOTORIOUS PART 2 by Brooklyn Dukes

That was a pretty cool write up about the movie. I have a different feel about it though. Granted, it's been about 2 weeks since I saw it, which is really like 2 months in my mind but outside of the facts she spoke of, the actors, the book it's based on, the story line, I would probably describe it as a movie for those that remember the 'Golden Age' of hip hop, when New York ruled the hip hop world. This film was a time capsule for those that remember what it was like to get the hot new Clue mixtape (and it really being a tape cassette),when we wore hockey jerseys and BET and MTV played videos. Being taken back to that time made me feel slightly aged as half of the members of the capacity filled movie theater in North jersey that I saw the flick at couldn't remember hip hop sans The Notorious B.I.G.This movie, for what it was, a loosely based biopic of one of the great musical legends of our time is what I would call, a Hip Hop Musical. I understand the purpose, but I swear there must've been 10 plus songs played or rapped from the bedroom scene with Lil' Kim (for the record, I understand why she would have been mad at the film....*) to the concert seen at HU....the Real HU, Imight add....from beginning to the end, I was stuck in my seat, with the most enjoyable of company watching Big struggle with finding his place in life, becoming a man and realizing what was and wasn't important. (While also being painted as a saint that loved and cared for Tupac like a brother, would've broken Faith's neck if he caught her after hearing Pac's jabs, crack selling to pregnant women, loving his mother and close circle of friends like they were his first born...well, in the toddler part of herlife...) As my eyes were glued to the screen, thinking, Derek Luke can't dance like Puff....I prayed for a different ending. Something, somewhere in side of me, I hoped that Biggie would survive the gunshots. Knowing how things would end, I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the 'real' footage ofBiggie's last ride through Brooklyn. That was a moment frozen in time that plays in my mind forever. The celebration of a life that touched so many....I mean, when was the last time you saw your favorite rapper walk the streets from where he came and hand out watches...?!B.I.G. was an icon and this movie was for me...and you and for all the other hip hop loyalist that fell out of love with her a while ago, needed a reminder of what those days were like or just wanted to be entertained for a few hours.Regardless, this was our movie, only shown in less than 1500 theaters, but still made more money on a per theater basis than the three that finished higher on the opening week grossing list. We still have a long way to go when two Holocaust related films come out, Valkyrie and Defiance, and we won't see that many Black faces on another movie until Tyler Perry releases something new. But, for those few hours, reliving the 90's again was dope! (had to take it back...I was gonna go with fresh, but saying dope, then folding your arms over your chest with the sideways stance was the ish back in the day!!!)* anyone that knows a real guy, one that feels like he can't do no wrong, young and feeling like he's on top of the world should know the dilemma that they deal with from trying to be straight forward and honest, but also enjoyingevery minute of being in the limelight and getting that attention that youalways wanted. I mean, it was BIG himself who said, 'shit don't ask me,I went from ashy to nasty to classy...' I say all that to say that Kim Jones should be pissed for the way she was portrayed in this movie. This movie was made with the Wallace estate in mind, not Kimberly Jones...and who really wants to tell Christopher Jr that his daddy was married to Faith but was in love with Lil Kim....personally and for the record, I wasn't there, but I think that it was so much more than a artist/talent, no emotion involved relationship...especially after seeing Mary having to comfort Kim in those pictures the day of the funeral.

Angela Bassett ( Voletta Wallace)

Derek Luke ( Sean Combs aka P.Diddy)
Antonique Smith ( Faith Evans)

Naturi Naughton ( Lil Kim)

Anthony Mackie ( Tupac Shakur)

Mark John Jefferies ( Lil Cease)

Rating: *****

This film is a biopic of the life of Christopher Wallace aka Biggie Smalls ( Notorious BIG). The movie is based off the book Unbelievable: The Life, Death and Afterlife of the Notorious B.I.G.," by Cheo Hodari Coker. The movie embodies Biggie's childhood; growing up yearning for more money, eventually becoming a drug dealer, a teenage father and imprisoned for his drug dealings. After his jail sentence he became more serious about his artistry. He met with Combs and became the Icon we all know today. The movie gives full details of the east coast/west coast feud. For anyone whose ever had questions about the Biggie Smalls dramas this movie gives full disclosure! Acting was excellent! Naturi who plays Lil Kim did a phenomenal job representing the Queen B. I guess Lil Kim was not pleased as how she was betrayed...well truth is truth. Angela Bassett was a great Voletta Wallace as well. I was happy to hear she was on board for this film. Tupac Shakur was also represented accurately in this movie. He is by far very many people the legend, the thug, the Renaissance man, the activist etc. I liked how they gave him a positive view even though there was miscommunication between him and Big. Overall, I have a lot of respect for this film, hip-hop lovers please support this film. It was made for us.....

Smith Double Feature

The Day The World Stood Still

Starring: Keanu Reeves, Jaden Smith, Jennifer Connely & Kathy Bates
Director: Scott Derrickson
Rating: **

The Day The Earth Stood Still is a remake of the 1951 film entitled the same. This is a movie about an alien being ( Keanu Reeves) coming to destroy earth from human beings environmental damage. However, a scientist ( Jennifer Connelly/Jaden Smith) and her step son try to prove to the alien that human's can and will change. Jaden's Smith's performance was very well received and look forward to seeing him in more films. The movie was thrilling and interesting until the last ten minutes which made it a flop. It reminded me a lot of the War between Worlds with Tom Cruise. Both films have awesome intros, strong climaxes and bad endings. However, graphics and imagery are excellent! Sad to say, I cant really give any further details of this movie because it would give it away. Recommendation: watch with caution.

Seven Pounds

Starring: Will Smith, Rosario Dawson, Wood Harelson and Michael Ealy
Director: Tood Black
Rating: ***

Seven Pounds is a story of a man ( Will Smith) who poses as character Ben Thomas, proceeds to give special gifts to seven people( Rosario Dawson, Woody Harrelson etc.),after his traumatic loss of his wife in a car accident. This film is an emotional roller coaster! You will need a box of tissue and an aspirin for this one. The element of mystery is there in the film, but the ending is very emotional. I do like the over all theme of this film, which is to give and live abundantly. The love story between Emily and Ben ( Dawson & Smith) is epic and beautiful. It represents all the things love should be sacrifice, patience, joy and promise. I do believe Will Smith will receive an Oscar for his performance. I personally, just wasn't a fan of this type of movie. Recommendation: Grab a Hanky.....

Twilight

Twilight
Director: Catherine Hardwicke
Stars: Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson
Rating: **
Twilight is a vampire romance film based on Stephanie Meyers book entitled Twilight . This movie is a definite snoozer. Its appeal would be to a sappy teenage couple, but the reality is this film didn't have enough meat on the topic plate for it to appeal to masses like movies such as Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. Its a plot we're all familiar with young woman falls in love with mysterious guy. The only thing different between this guy and any other love story guy is that he's a vampire which is revealed in previews. On a brighter note graphics were excellent and the last 30 minutes were entertaining. If anyone knows anything about books, the media likes to make movies out of a book that has a big following. The movie industry has gotten greedy trying to turn good novels into box office hits. Sad to say, very few movies actually live up to their book success. This wont be the last you hear of Twilight or just of my knowledge of the books, it might be called New Moon. Watcher beware....your in for dissapointment.

The Beginning of a Beautiful Friendship

I decided to write my first entry on my life. The movie critic is also an employment specialist for a non-profit that houses criminals. I know it sounds scary, but hey its a paycheck! I help transition ex-offenders for the work world. Did i mention, that I love movies?I want to write a script for a movie, direct one or be a leading actress in it some day. My dream list is endless. I seem to have trouble staying focused to accomplish some of them. I'm still young, I have time. Turning 25 this year was hard for me. It meant child-hood is over and now is the time to be independent, to be this great person. I wonder if I will add up to what is expected from me. I'm realizing that you have to live for you, not for anyone else. Yeah that may seem cliche, but truth is how many times do you find yourself pleasing everyone but you? I love music, its my inspiration for everything. I love all types/genres/artist/ If I could pick a favorite artist it would be Beyonce, hands down! I love her soul/pop/alternative musical style. I like artist who show they can be versatile. I enjoy the arts as well, I love to hit up a good play, learn a new form of art and appreciate others talents. I choose to do this blog because I am a true movie lover/hater. I enjoy critiquing good movies and making sure people know about the bad ones.
